This is Antonietta Condello I am an employee at York University and a community advocate with Toronto Crime Stoppers. Who has a true compassion and humbleness that lives for my deep belief in and love for children. It is an honor to be part on the “Team Michael Heaton” crew and work behind the scenes to make TorontoBMX a success. Throughout the years I have gained so much knowledge from Mike Heaton’s vision of building more BMX bike parks to engage our youth with life skills surrounding the BMX sport, with the goals of success and safety. Every year at 75 Tandridge BMX bike park we run our summer camp. What we do day to day is we first try and teach the basics of BMX from the history/culture to doing tricks and fixing bikes. We play bike games to normal games, but we mostly teach them to have confidence with a bike and be able to do beginner tricks. Many looking forward to having their own BMX bikes one day. This gave me the opportunity to learn so much from Jason Tojeiro and Tyler Jackson who is our mentor for our summer camp.
I have shared many wonderful memories during camp; the kids are filled with happiness. This project has resulted in the BMX sport helping youth succeed, making them feel part of something. Each one of us is born with a unique gift lets help plant the seed for growth. We must give our youth a chance and not judge them until we have walked in their shoes. This might be their only escape and we should provide them with a second chance. Inspire now show leadership; we can all do more to make a difference. I want to provide them opportunity by giving them everything they need for success.
To end off our Summer Camp on Sunday September 16, 2012 we celebrated 75 Tandridge BMX Back to School BBQ. It was a fun filled day with Graffiti mural painting, music, prizes and cool swag giveaways. All the kids received an award of excellence in recognition for their personal commitment, dedication, and performance in Tandridge BMX Summer Camp 2012.
We are truly grateful to Court and Kirsten Carruthers, Toronto Community Housing Corporation, Toronto Police Service (SSgt. Paul MacIntyre 32 Div, Sgt. Worth TAVIS/RRT & SSgt. Kim Scanlan 23Div #2012NTI), RCMP Valérie Paradis, Communities Advancing Valued Environments (CAVE) Leyla Bulcan & Paul Aiello, Mentor at Tandridge BMX bike park Tyler Jackson, Jason Tojeiro, Michael Heaton, Al Crawford (Toronto Parks, Forestry & Recreation) Charmaine Roye and our Graffiti artist Kedre Browne & Jessey Pacho. For continuous support over the years for Toronto BMX Wallace Emerson & 75 Tandridge Cres. You all have changed many kids’ lives, giving them a voice and showing them the importance of building healthy relationships between the community and police. Sept 16/12′ 75 Tandridge BMX back to school BBQ was an example of community & police working together to make the world a better place and the positive impact it can have.
I thank my family and of course my black lab Bear for being patient with me through my mission. I am blessed to have friends who have shared many wonderful ideas and support along the way. The list is endless and you all know who you are. There are individuals in your life that will always have a piece of your heart till the end. I like to start off with Scott Mills this journey would have not been possible if you had not opened the doors of opportunity for me. There is nothing in the world that can thank you enough and all you do to make the world a better place. Stephen Welton for sharing a wonderful cause with me and joined his Gratitude Challenge. It has allowed me to understand the importance of acting on my promptings, being grateful, reach out to others in kindness and soaring like an eagle. Robert Cairns who works tirelessly to ensure community participates and gets involved for success & safety. Robert’s dedication to the BMX and Graffiti projects has been a blessing.
On behalf of the Tandridge BMX Summer Camp we like to extend our warm appreciation for making this happen! Looking forward to many more successful years to come
